VT BJJ Conditioning Training Classes and the “Training Dummy”

BJJ Conditioning Training Classes: includes Calisthenics; “Ginastica Natural”; The Agility Ladder & Plyometrics; Boxing/Kickboxing Drills & Skills; Takedowns Drills and Burpees; Flexibility Exercises & Cardio-Respiratory Endurance; The Bulgarian Bag; The Sledge Hammer and The Tire, etc.

The conditioning training is a very important part of BJJ and the foundation of health and strength! Get strong and confident naturally!

The “Training Dummy”; we practice a lot of Jiu-Jitsu with our training “Dummy”! Chokes, Arm-bars, Guard (Scissors, Open and Closed, etc.); Knee on the Belly; Side-Control; Holding Techniques and coordination drills.

Please find below information about our training protocols and temporary classes schedule.

We will prioritize outdoor, as opposed to indoor, activity (training sessions) as much as possible.


*Stay home when sick or symptomatic (with fever, cough and/or shortness of breath).
*Please arrive at the school 15 minutes before class scheduled time.
*We will promote outdoor training whenever it’s possible.
*Restrict access to training sessions for students only. It is prohibited spectators and visitors watching the class.
* Remove your shoes and leave them at the door. We will provide disinfecting upon entrance at the entry-door for shoes of all students.
*We may check the temperature of everyone who enters the gym. We will use a non-contact thermometer to check your temperature before entering the school.
*We will implement protocol with respect to the social distancing guidelines.
*Come dressed accordingly (Shorts and t-shirt). We will avoid the use of changing rooms.
*Plan to use the restroom prior to your arrival to the school.
*All athletes and instructors should have a beach towel or yoga mat; their own bottle of water and must not share with others.
*Students should have their own training gear; no sharing training equipment.


*We will provide sanitizer stations for student and instructors.
*Each student/instructor must bring their personal disinfectant and protection material (hand sanitizer with at least 70% alcohol, towel and personal protective mask) and must not share.
*No more hand-shakes (for a period of time)
*All training equipment will be cleaned and disinfected before and after each training session.
*We will no longer keep any training gear or personal items (Lost & Found).


*Our hours of Operation will be limited.
*We will diversify classes/schedules to distribute students and avoid crowds by limiting each class time to (30 minutes).
*We will promote outdoor training whenever it’s possible.
*Students will work on calisthenics; plyometrics and conditioning; coordination drills; shadow boxing and the “Training Dummy” with no live “rolling” until the Pandemic has passed so we can operate safely.
*The VT Dept of Health recommends small gatherings (15 People) including instructor.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Intro & Fundamentals Program

Our introductory program is perfect for you! This is the best way to get started in realistic martial arts, starting at the same time as other beginners (you won’t be the only new person on the mat!), and learning exactly the things you need to learn when you first get started. This program is the absolute ideal way to get started in BJJ. This 4-week Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Intro Program covers the basic fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with a realistic approach to self-defense training skills in a friendly, safe and positive environment. No martial arts skills or experience required. You can decide whether you’d like to continue training with us at the end of the 4-week program, too! There’s no obligation whatsoever.

Best of all – you don’t need any equipment to get started! The minimum stuff to begin will be provided to you before your first class. This is really an unbeatable deal, and an amazing way to get started!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu beginners adults program

The BJJ Beginners Program teaches basic principles of effective fighting and self-defense to individuals and its structure condenses an immense diversity of BJJ techniques into core fundamental moves combined intelligently and safely to optimize learning.

Along with learning an invaluable form of self-defense skills and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu basic fundamental techniques, students will discover huge improvement in life quality, self-esteem, confidence, discipline and health. NO-GI, Grappling, Boxing And MMA

Julio “Foca” Fernandez was born in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Julio started training in Judo when he was 6 years old. At age seventeen he started training in Jiu-Jitsu with Carlson Gracie Sr. Julio is the President of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu United States Association (BJJUSA), the co-founder of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Revolution Team, with his friend Rodrigo Medeiros and co-author of the book “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for Experts Only” with his instructor Carlson Gracie Sr. He teaches with great affection, encouragement, he does not criticize and wants his students to feel inspired.

Julio has over 35 years of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experience and competed in all Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the 1980’s and competed in almost 200 matches representing the Carlson Gracie Team.

Julio Fernandez is the only Certified 6th Degree Black Belt Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Self Defense instructor under late Grand Master Carlson Gracie Sr. currently teaching in the USA. Julio Fernandez is CBJJ (Confederacao Brasileira de Jiu-Jitsu), USBJJF (United States Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation) and IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation) Certified Black Belt Belt instructor.
